It doesn’t look like it, but when you read this recipe, to me, it screams retro. Retro, like a recipe your grandma would have made way back in the day. This is totally something my Nonnie would have made on repeat.

It’s EASY, which we of course love. My Nonnie was a real pro at creating delicious dinners that took very little effort on her part. She knew her time was better spent shopping with me!

Her secret was using ingredients that did double the work. She would incorporate a lot of store-bought seasoning packets and sauces to add flavor. She’d also take shortcuts whenever she could. But regardless, her dinners were always delicious, and I know she’d fully approve of this recipe.

So what is the “retro” secret ingredient here? A little bit of ketchup. It gives this sticky sauce added body, flavor, and sweetness.

I know it’s not a new concept by any means, but I don’t often use ketchup for cooking. I usually reserve it for dipping my french fries. But I’m now sold on using ketchup in sauces. Sounds odd, but wow, it’s so delicious.

The details

This recipe is so simple and straightforward. Grab some broccoli and chicken, I love to use a mix of chicken breasts and thighs. My family prefers chicken breasts, but I think thighs always add flavor. They give just the right amount of fat to keep chicken from drying out. I find a mix is always nice!

Arrange the chicken and broccoli inside a baking dish. I use a smaller sheet pan with sides. Ideally, you want to use something a little smaller than a 9×13 inch baker. This will allow the sauce to better thicken around the chicken. A sheet pan with sides is perfect!

Now the sauce. Mix equal amounts of honey, ketchup, and tamari (or soy sauce) together. Then add tart pomegranate juice, garlic, ginger, and chili flakes. Mix and pour the sauce over the chicken.

Bake until the sauce thickens slightly around the pieces of chicken and broccoli.

At the end of cooking, I like to switch the oven to the broil setting and get the chicken caramelized on top. Just watch closely, the broiler can really work FAST.

I was shocked at how well the timing of everything ended up working out. Nothing fancy here, just simple cooking, but very delicious.

Serve the sauce, chicken, and broccoli over steamed rice with plenty of green onions, and if you’re into it, pomegranates too. I love using them because they add color and juiciness.

Had the same problem as everyone else. The sauce was super watery. There’s no way broiling longer would’ve thickened it without turning the chicken and broccoli to a char. However, it was still flavorful.

    1. Hi Claire,
Thanks for giving this recipe a try and sharing your feedback. So sorry to hear it was so watery for you! xT

Made this following the instant pot recipe and it was horrible. Sauce was watery and the fresh broccoli turned to mush. We make a TON of half baked harvest recipes. Sure this is a success prepared differently but would 100% NOT recommend making it in the instant pot.

Made this yummy dish for my holiday soirée. Important to follow a new recipe to a T! Some comments reported the sauce being watery. My suggestion is to rinse the broccoli and chicken early on so it has a chance to dry first. It was a hit! Thank you!!

    1. Hey Luanne,
Happy Holidays!! Thanks so much for making this recipe, I love to hear that it turned out well for you!🎁🎅

This was delicious, although not sticky due to chicken juices. Broiling immediately began to burn the broccoli. I would absolutely make this again, but we all agreed we’d do this as a stir-fry with a slurry. I added a healthy teaspoon of pepper flakes for an excellent balance of hot and sweet.

Second time making flavours are just as wonderful- first time my sauce was so thin , took a few tips from the reviews and made some modifications. Added broccoli and mushrooms have way through, marinated the chicken in half the sauce and did the rest in a sauce pan, wasn’t nearly as runny! New favourite

After reading some of the comments on here, I decided to lookup another cooking method for chicken in the instapot BUT I used the flavors/recipe from this. I ended up throwing the chicken in for 3 mins on high pressure with Tieghan’s sauce mixture. While that was cooking, I sautéed some broccoli and made rice on the stove. Once the chicken was done, I quick released the pressure, and added cornstarch to the sauce to thicken it. Then I add some raw chopped up green and red bell pepper and mixed it in. I proceeded to add the broccoli and let it sit in the instapot pot with the lid on for another 5 mins to “steam.” Afterwards, we put the rice and chicken together with a little chili sauce on top! Tasted delicious ❤️

    1. Also I replaced the soy sauce for coconut aminos since we are cutting out soy products and it worked great with the measurements provided!

    2. Hey Bella,
Happy Monday!❄️🎄 I appreciate you making this recipe and sharing your review, so glad to hear it was enjoyed! xT

  7. This turned out great! I poured some of the sauce/marinade over the broccoli as well as the chicken, baked all together for about 20 min, then pulled the broccoli out before broiling the chicken. The sauce was still a bit thin/liquidy (rather than thickening up) but it tasted great! My husband enjoyed it too and it made great leftovers for the next day.

    1. Hey Lindsay,
Awesome!! Thanks a lot for making this recipe, I am so glad it turned out well for you! Have a great weekend!🎄⛄️

5 stars IF you follow modify. Cooked for exactly 22 minutes in a cast iron before broiling. The last few minutes I added a cornstarch slurry to thicken which did the trick. Perfectly cooked. Good balance of sweet, savory and spicy

    1. Hey Jess,

Mine is not sticky at all, its runny and pretty unflavorful. These sheet pan recipes never seem to turn out for me, maybe I need to stay away from them!

    1. Hi Ashlee,
Thanks for giving the recipe a try and sharing your feedback, sorry to hear this did not turn out for you. Sounds like you just needed to broil longer for the sauce to thicken. I hope this helps! xx

This turned out nothing like the imagery and I followed the recipe to a T. The sauce also is too ketchup forward for my preference. Also, one line of the recipe says baking dish and the other baking sheet…

    1. Hey Regan,
Sorry to hear this recipe was not enjoyed, sounds like it just needed to broil longer. You want to use a baking dish or sheet that has sides, so either one:) xx

Glad I read the reviews so I was ready for the watery mess which happened to me too. Instead of baking the veggies with chicken, I put the broccoli on one sheet and the chicken on another pan sheet. I baked broccoli 350 degrees for 25 min and chicken at 425 for 30 min. I poured the sauce over both pans and saved some sauce that I heated up in a sauce pan to pour over chicken and broccoli after it was cooked. After the chicken was cooked and in a watery mess, I transferred the chicken over with the broccoli and then poured the remaining sauce I had saved over the chicken and broccoli then broiled it. It ended up looking just like yours and the flavor was delish! Like I said, I’m glad I read the reviews otherwise it would have been a big disappointment.

    1. Hey Carla,
Happy Holidays!🎄🎁 Thanks for trying this recipe and sharing your feedback, glad to hear it turned out for you! xx

I was excited to try this because I love the idea of one sheet pan meals. The chicken and broccoli were tender and cooked just the way we like them BUT I wish I had kept a closer eye on my oven. 25 minutes and the sauce bubbled and burned all over my oven out of the lined sheet pan that I had prepared. The sauce is too sweet for my liking. Would definitely use low sugar ketchup and/or scale back on the honey

    1. Hi Megan,
Thanks for giving this recipe a try, so sorry to hear you had some issues but you definitely need to use a pan that has high sides here. I hope this helps! xx

I made this in the instant pot and it didn’t turn out great. I should’ve listened to my gut when the time said 18-20 minutes. The broccoli totally disintegrated and was way overcooked and the chicken (both dark and white meat) was overcooked. And the sauce wasn’t thick and syrupy, it was super watery. The flavors seem like they would work, but the next time I will try it oven-method.

    1. Hi Jill,
Thanks for giving this dish a try and sharing your review, so sorry it didn’t turn out for you! Let me know if I can help with anything or if you give the oven method a try! xx
