It doesn’t look like it, but when you read this recipe, to me, it screams retro. Retro, like a recipe your grandma would have made way back in the day. This is totally something my Nonnie would have made on repeat.

It’s EASY, which we of course love. My Nonnie was a real pro at creating delicious dinners that took very little effort on her part. She knew her time was better spent shopping with me!

Her secret was using ingredients that did double the work. She would incorporate a lot of store-bought seasoning packets and sauces to add flavor. She’d also take shortcuts whenever she could. But regardless, her dinners were always delicious, and I know she’d fully approve of this recipe.

So what is the “retro” secret ingredient here? A little bit of ketchup. It gives this sticky sauce added body, flavor, and sweetness.

I know it’s not a new concept by any means, but I don’t often use ketchup for cooking. I usually reserve it for dipping my french fries. But I’m now sold on using ketchup in sauces. Sounds odd, but wow, it’s so delicious.

The details

This recipe is so simple and straightforward. Grab some broccoli and chicken, I love to use a mix of chicken breasts and thighs. My family prefers chicken breasts, but I think thighs always add flavor. They give just the right amount of fat to keep chicken from drying out. I find a mix is always nice!

Arrange the chicken and broccoli inside a baking dish. I use a smaller sheet pan with sides. Ideally, you want to use something a little smaller than a 9×13 inch baker. This will allow the sauce to better thicken around the chicken. A sheet pan with sides is perfect!

Now the sauce. Mix equal amounts of honey, ketchup, and tamari (or soy sauce) together. Then add tart pomegranate juice, garlic, ginger, and chili flakes. Mix and pour the sauce over the chicken.

Bake until the sauce thickens slightly around the pieces of chicken and broccoli.

At the end of cooking, I like to switch the oven to the broil setting and get the chicken caramelized on top. Just watch closely, the broiler can really work FAST.

I was shocked at how well the timing of everything ended up working out. Nothing fancy here, just simple cooking, but very delicious.

Serve the sauce, chicken, and broccoli over steamed rice with plenty of green onions, and if you’re into it, pomegranates too. I love using them because they add color and juiciness.

  1. Excited to give this a try! Currently trying to use up some veggies in the freezer. Do you think frozen broccoli would work with this? Would I just defrost before hand, drain excess water? And then add to the sheet pan?

    1. Hey Hannah,
Yes, that would work well for you! Please let me know if you give this recipe a try, I hope you love it! xx

    1. Sorry! I’ve not tested this in the air fryer, I probably wouldn’t add the sauce until after everything is cooked. Let me know if you give it a try! xx

  2. Hi, I made this last night and although it tasted very good, the sauce was very watery and not sticky at all. Anything to help this if I made it again?

    1. Hey Michelle,
Happy Friday!!🌟 Love to hear that this recipe was tasty for you, thanks so much for trying it out! Next time, I would reduce the soy sauce to 2/3 cup and use 2 tablespoons of pomegranate juice and then broil for longer. I hope this helps! xT

        1. Hey Charlotte,
I actually just adjusted the recipe, it used to call for more, I would just use 1/3 cup soy sauce. I hope this helps! xx

Made this last night and it was disappointing. As the other commenters have pointed out, the sauce was just way too liquidy and didn’t get sticky at all. The sheet pan chicken & brussels sprouts is a better version of this recipe…

    1. Hey Marie,
So sorry to hear this recipe was not enjoyed! Next time, I would reduce the soy sauce to 2/3 cup and use 2 tablespoons pomegranate juice and broil longer. I hope this helps! xx

    1. Hey Katie,
Happy Friday!!🌟 Love to hear that this recipe was tasty for you, thanks so much for trying it out! xT

Made this for dinner tonight and everyone enjoyed it. I made it in the oven and broiled it, which i think made it better. I didn’t think I’d get the texture I wanted with Instant Pot. My sauce wasn’t sticky but it still had good flavor. I drizzled with a chili crunch oil instead of flakes and it gave it just the right amount of heat. Will definitely make again as a quick weeknight meal.

    1. Hey Erin,
Wonderful!! Thanks so much for trying this recipe out and sharing your review! I love to hear that this was enjoyed! xx

I liked the idea of this recipe, but it is clearly not meant for an instant pot. It comes out very watery and definitely not sticky like the name suggests. It is more like a stew when it’s done. The broccoli is limp, as 20 mins in an instant pot is too long to cook a vegetable like broccoli. I have made a lot of recipes off HBH but this one is not working for me.

    1. Hi Sandra,
Thanks for giving this recipe a try and sharing your feedback, so sorry to hear it was not enjoyed! xT

  6. Can’t wait to try this! I’ll be making a meatless version so subbing chicken for tofu or maybe just extra assorted vegetables. BUT certainly that sauce will enhance anything it’s paired with! Thanks again!

    1. 2 stars
I’m a big fan of HBH. And I followed this recipe to a T. But this dish was so watery and the broccoli was not cooked enough.
The photo made my mouth water. I really thought I was going to get a sticky yummy dish. There was NO sauce stuck to the chicken. Zero. What did I do wrong?

  7. 5 stars
Excellent tasting recipe! We loved it, but I was disappointed in that your sauce looks thick and mine was watery….I used soy sauce instead of the tamari.

    1. Had the same problem! Everything was more liquidy instead of sticky, and I used Tamari. Tasted great, but not one I would make again.

    2. Hey Shari,
Happy Friday!!🌟 Love to hear that this recipe was tasty for you, thanks so much for trying it out! It may have just needed more time to thicken up or a cornstarch slurry to help it along:) xT

  8. So excited to try this today! My family is vegetarian, if I swap for tofu would I follow the same directions or would it be better to pan fry?

    1. Hey Christina,
I really don’t ever work with tofu, but maybe pan frying would be a better option for you. Let me know if you give this recipe a try, I hope you love it! xx

  9. Hiya Teighan- just wanted to ask about the broccoli- does it initially mix with the chicken, then pour the sauce over it all?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Wendy,
You’re going to do the chicken then the sauce and the the broccoli on time. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions! xx

  10. Excited to try this recipe… Wondering if I could use already cooked chicken? If so, how would you recommend?

Also would it be weird to replace Pomegranate with cranberry juice?

Thank you ever so much for sharing your inspirations with all of us!

    1. Hey Cristen,
If you are using already cooked chicken you would literally just be drizzling the sauce over the chicken, I would stick with the recipe as written if you can:) Cranberry juice would be just fine for you to use! Let me know if you have any other questions! xT

  11. Hi! I can’t wait to try this recipe, post it, and tag you! The broccoli link takes me to frozen broccoli, is that what you suggest? Secondly, I’m not really a fan of honey flavor (I wish I was!) – what can I use instead of honey? Thank you!!

    1. Hey Jamie,
Thanks so much!! Sorry about the link, if you can use fresh broccoli I would recommend using that! And try using maple syrup in place of the honey:) I hope you love this recipe! xx

    1. Hi Isabel,
Please follow the oven instructions listed above:) I hope this recipe turns out well for you, please let me know if you have any other questions! xx

  12. This looks delicious!! I want to prep this meal ahead of time, do you think I could mix it all together and then cook the next day?
I love all your recipes, thank you for keeping our meals interesting 🙂

    1. When I prep ahead I like to make the sauce and put it in a jar, cut the chicken and veggies, and cook the rice. Then day of you can just toss everything together to put in the oven and reheat the rice.

    2. Hey Vanessa,
Sure, that would be just fine for you to do! Let me know if you give this recipe a try, I hope it’s delish! xT
