Thanks for joining me for another Nine Favorite Things post!
Hey, hi! Happy Sunday! My family and I are in Cleveland for my Nonnieโs memorial service, and while itโs definitely a sad time and a time for reflection, itโs also fun to be back โhomeโ with family and friends. Iโm speaking at the service tomorrow, so today will be spent finding something to wear, and working on what to say. Iโve already been working on my speech, but itโs not the easiest thing to write-up. Tips anyone ?
On a much happier note, tonight we are having a surprise birthday party for little miss Asher who turns eight years old on August 30th. The little girl is big on birthdays so my mom decided to do a surprise party while all of our family is in town. Asher has spent her whole life in Colorado, so sheโs never had a family birthday partyโฆshe is going to LOVE it! If thereโs anyone that would love a surprise party, itโs Asher. Girl loves a party, especially one all about her. Iโm pretty excited to see her face!
Note: my mom just told me Asher is turning 9โฆhow can that beโฆNO!
On the blog front, itโs going to be a big week! We have a very exciting post going up, itโs something Iโve been dying to share, but with my being out of town Iโm still not sure what day it will be. I also have a funย cookbook announcement (this was actually supposed to happen last week), an easy end of summer dinner, and a peachy treat that will have you begging for seconds. Itโs going to be fun and delicious week.
What are you guys up today? Hoping youโre all soaking up these last days of summer by doing something fun! If you happen to be hitting the farmers market be sure to check out my dinner plan for the week at then end of this post!
Here are todayโs favorite. This is slightly shorter version, next week we will be back will my usual long as ever post! Have great Sunday and enjoy all the fun reads!
1. Anxiety, do you guys have it?ย As mentioned in Fridayโs post, anxiety has been something Iโve struggled with since I was a kid, and while itโs been pretty mellow the last few years, I had a major flare up this past week. Thereโs just been a lot happening over here, with a lot of moving parts. I didnโt even realize I was so anxious, but then it hit me, and hard. Suddenly I could not turn my brain off and it was a constant slew of anxious thoughts. After many years of dealing with almost consistently feeling anxious (mostly school anxiety), I have found a few natural ways to cope. Getting outside and hiking, eating plenty of fruits and veggies, and just talking it out with someoneโฆaka mom, are some of my coping strategies.
This time around I tried a few new to me things. First, I cut out coffee for the week. I read online that coffee can be a stimulant for anxiety, so I decided to cut that out for a little while. I donโt think itโs plays that big a factor for me though, so I will definitely be drinking coffee again, and soon. Second, I decided to write down all my thoughts of what was making me anxious and why. From there I wrote down if I thought I had control of the situation or not. This really helped, not only to just get my thoughts on paper, but also to see what I could do to change things and what I could not. Third, I started taking vitamin B12, which are proven to naturally help with stress and energy levels. Lastly, I actually ended up heading to the doctor, just for a check up, and just to be sure that nothing else was causing all of this sudden anxiousness. I really did not want to go, but Iโm glad I did because just going and getting checked out and hearing the โyou are in perfect healthโ bill made me feel one hundred times better. I canโt sayโs my anxiety is gone(โฆum because tomorrow I am speaking in front of a ton of people), but I am feeling much better and ready to take one a new week.
Iโd love to hear if any of you have dealt with serious anxiety and what you have done to cope. It will always be something Iโll have to deal with, so if you guys have found things that help, please let me know!
Here are a couple of anxiety related articles I found that were really helpful this last weekโฆ
โ> what to eat for breakfast to help ease your anxietyโฆall about those berries and eggs.
โ> the one vitamin that benefits your mood, energy, heart, and skinโฆB12.

Hi, Tieghan! I love your blog and want to encourage youโI have struggled with anxiety for several years. I had my first panic attack at 23 and I literally felt like I was going crazy. It is an awful thing to live with. Cutting caffeine helped me SO much. I drink decaf coffee or chai when I am craving them, but I mostly stick to herbal teas. All the things you mentioned in addition to getting enough sleep, not going crazy on the sugar, praying, and doing mindfulness exercises really help me. Sometimes anxiety rears its ugly head regardless of what we do, for reasons we might not ever understand. Know that you arenโt alone ๐
Hey Kelly! Thank you SO much for the encouraging words. it is always so nice to know I am not the only one who struggles with anxiety. Cutting down on coffee has helped for sure, though I still have a cup in the morning! I need to work on getting a little more sleep, but thankfully I am feeling so much better! Itโs day by thing, but glad to be taking control again!
Thanks again and I hope you are having a great weekend!
Hi Tieghan! Iโm so happy youโre sharing both these struggles and happiness, so refreshing in a world of blogs and social media where everyone curates a โperfect lifeโ all the time. As for anxiety, it may be worth finding a psychologist or therapist in your area. I didnโt really think I needed one for my anxious brain but once I started I went for two years! Its so life changing to speak to an unbiased person, and theyโre able to make you see yourself/your life/ and your relationships in ways that you may never have been able to.
Also, thereโs an amazing free app that I use to this day called Stop, Breathe, and Think. You can choose from a list of meditations (super short ones to more lengthy ones), or, what I really love about it, is you can enter your feelings and emotions to check in with yourself and itโll recommend meditations for you! Its really wonderful and I hope it helps you ๐
Thank you so much for this Gabrielle! I really appreciate you sharing these things with me & I will definitely try out that app! ?
Hi Tieghan,
Itโs so good that youโre talking about your anxiety struggles here! You know, itโs nothing to be ashamed of. Sooooo many people struggle with this. I do too! ๐
Of course doing things like hiking, eating right, talking to people you care about, etc.. can be very helpful. But so can medication. I was really against it but my anxiety got so bad I couldnโt get out of bed so I tried it and it really made a difference! It just takes the edge off so you obsess less and are less prone to panic attacks. Just throwing it out there ๐ Youโre the best!!
Karen
Thank you so much for this Karen! It is comforting to hear other people going through the same things as I am. This was super sweet and needed ?
Very timely post โ had one not happy anxiety event today due to a work issue. Thank you Joan for posting the video from Dr. Weil โ it was so timely and will employ for certain. They can paralyze a person. So.Not.Good.
โฆand thank you Tieghan for being so open about your struggles. Being transparent and reaching out to say, it is real and nothing to hide away as a bad thing. We are all put on this earth to help each other. We are humans, and flawed, and we just need to be kind in our hearts and spirit. And learn how to breathe, well and the good.
Great blog post Tieghanโฆand have a great surprise for Asher; what anupbeat note while in Clevelandโฆwe appreciate you so much!
Thank you Tammy! I could not agree more! I hope you have a great week!
I use to get really bad anxiety but breathing technique virtually cured me of it. Itโs very rare I get it anymore. I canโt watch the video above right now but what I was taught was very slowly breath in while counting to 10. Hold it slowly counting to 10 and then also very slowly breathing out for the count of 10. Hope that helps. Itโs not a pleasant thing to deal with at all. (hugs)
Thank you so much for sharing that Susan! I will try that out for sure. Hope you have a great rest of your week!
Can hardly wait for 9 favorite things!!! Love them all and it gives me time to think about things, little and big!!! I donโt know if this is hard to doโฆbut keep them coming!!!
I am so glad you love this Terri! Thank you so much!
Iโm a 70 year old fan of your site ๐ but have also struggled with anxiety for many many years. I see it as a sign that my life has gotten somewhat out of balance and I need to pay more attention to whatโs going on. In the moment that anxiety hits, the biggest help Iโve found is controlled breathing. Dr. Weil has been my life saver โ I practice his technique every day a number of times without fail. It puts me to sleep but also calms anxiety for me. He specifically addresses the issue of anxiety at the end of the following video.

Thank you so much for this Joan! I completely agree with you, and I hope this helps me as well.
I forgot to tell you yesterday, Something that is helping me is to do breathing exercises. I downloaded an app online, which help you giving you steps how to meditate and breathe. It is helping me a lot to control the anxiety.
Thank you so much Carlos! I think I will try out a breathing app or online meditation. Means a lot for you to share this with me!
A good acupuncturist may be another tool in your arsenal for anxiety. A few years ago I struggled with sleeping due to what I called โwhite noiseโin my head. After one session I found my sleep phenomenally improved, which in turn improved my mood and overall health and outlook . I wish you and your family peace in this difficult time.
I have heard that acupuncture helps with so many things, I may just have to try it! Thank you for this Heather!
Hi Thiegan, how recognizableโฆ My anxiety peaked (after some years of being โstableโ) in June because of a total overload of work, kids, baking, โฆ One has to make choices and find a balance to keep things fun (and the anxiety under control). For now, Iโm having better days and less good days. (Which is already better then no good days at all :-)). Once you have โcrossed the lineโ it takes some time to get the anxiety level down, but weโll get there. Getting enough sleep and moderate exercise is important to feel comfortable. One step at the time. I admire your blog, recipes and pictures. Respect!!! Love from Belgium
I am happy you are doing better, Ellen. Thank you so much for sharing this with me! It means so much ?
Iโm totally with you on anxiety! Exercise (running) and staying busy helps me a lot โ Iโm also taking B vitamins, and that seems to help too. A healthy diet is a must, but I know you already have that covered! ๐ Much love to you, and hope the service went well!
Thank you Laura! I have started taking B vitamins, so I hope those help!
Hi Tieghan,
Iโm 16 years old, in recovery from anorexia and binge eating, and I battle both depression and anxiety- so I totally get where you are coming from. What always helps me is lying flat on my back and taking deep breaths with my hands on my stomach. Or, if I can, being in a bath or a pool always really calms me down too. Stroking something really soft always helps too.
I spoke at my grandfatherโs service in May. I think the important thing to remember is that you canโt say anything wrong- whatever you feel, say, or do is ok, and no one is going to judge you. Just say what feels important for other people to know and what makes you smile when you think about your Nonnie.
I love your blog so much, by the way! Your photography is absolutely stunning!
Hang in there, Tieghan!
Hi Charlsie! I am so glad you are in recovery, that is amazing. Thank you for these amazing suggestions, I think they will really help. My family also said to me that I could not say anything wrong, which totally helped. Thank you & I hope you love some of the recipes if you get a chance to try them!
I know you were thinking about getting a dogโฆ my pup helps with my stress/anxiety so much ๐
Dogs are just the sweetest. Thank you Krista!
I can definitely relate with the anxiety! What helps me is exercise (regular hikes in nature!), a healthy diet, some yoga, focusing my energy on something I enjoy (photography, reading, etc.). Finding a work-life balance is a big one โ I havenโt figured that one completely yet, but it helps to relax a little. ๐
Thank you so much Caroline!
Try to cherish as much time with your loved ones here in Cleveland as you can. If youโre anywhere near me, I recommend checking out the Sunday weekly Farmerโs Market at Legacy Village ๐ As for anxiety = OOOHHHHH yes. Iโm a major perfectionist, type A gal. Daily meditation and gratitude, as โhippy dippyโ as it sounds, have helped me TREMENDOUSLY. Sending my thoughts and prayers to you and your family.
Thank you Liz! Wish I got a chance to check that out, but we were not near there while I was in Cleveland! Next time tho haha! I will have to try meditation, I think that would help! Thanks so much!
