These Easy Homemade Flour Tortillas are so much better than anything from the store. Homemade tortillas are extra soft, doughy, and chewy. I like to add salted butter, for extra deliciousness. Fresh flour tortillas are so easy to make at home and pretty difficult to mess up. No yeast + no rising time = simple as can be!

When it comes to flour tortillas, I never thought I would care to take the time to make them at home. But after realizing just how simple they can be, I’ve been making them almost weekly. They’re pretty much a staple for our family’s Mexican dinners.
These are DELICIOUS, and like nothing you’ll find in the grocery store.
Homemade tortillas are softer, chewier, and you just can’t beat the flavor.

Simply mix flour, baking powder, and salt together. Then, add softened butter and hot water. Mix this until a soft, shaggy dough forms, then use your hands to need the dough into a smooth ball.
Let the dough rest for 10 minutes to allow the gluten to settle.

Divide the dough into 12 to 14 dough balls, then roll each out using a rolling pin. If you have a tortilla press, that will make things very easy! I don’t have one, but it’s on my list of items to invest in.
I like to roll all the dough balls out before I start cooking any of the tortillas. This helps the cooking process go much easier and smoother.

It’s best to use a cast-iron skillet if you can, then add a drizzle of olive oil. Most people don’t use oil to cook the tortillas, but I’ve found you get a much better outcome with just a small amount of oil in the pan.
Cook until bubbles appear on top. Then. just like a pancake, flip and cook until lightly golden.
These are delicious warm, right off the skillet. Fresh fajitas or tacos can also be stored for up to 3 days, or kept frozen for even longer!
These are also great with quesadillas, skillet verde chicken, chili, and more!

This was my first attempt at homemade tortillas and oh my goodness!! They are amazing! We were on a “make dinner with what we have in the kitchen” day, so I found this recipe and made the best beef tacos! And tonight I’m making chicken tacos with the rest of them. Can’t wait to eat when my husband gets home from work! Thank you! 10/10
Hey Amanda,
Amazing! Thanks a bunch for trying this recipe and your feedback, so glad it was enjoyed!
Hello…I accidentally used half a cup of cold/warm water and half a cup of hot water. Does that affect how the tortillas would come out?
Hi Kristina,
I think they should be okay for you! Thanks for giving the recipe a try!
Once you roll out your tortillas can you put the in the fridge to use later in the day? I noticed mine had little white spots on them. Looked like moisture
Hi Kimberly,
Sure, I would just layer between parchment paper so you don’t have any issues with sticking. I hope this helps!
can i use regular salt instead of kosher salt?
Hi Amy,
Yes, that is perfectly okay to do. I hope you love this recipe!
Do you think if I tried this with almond flour it would still be good? Trying to make a gluten free option.
Hi Jeanette,
So sorry, I don’t almond flour will be your best option here, I would try a gluten free flour blend. I hope this helps!
Quick question, I’m doing a fridge clearout, and I only have margarine. Can i substitute it for butter?
Super excited to try this recipe!
Hi Jiawen,
So sorry, I have never personally tried that, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work for you! I hope you love this recipe!
It’s been 15 or so years since I last made my own tortillas. I’d never used baking powder in mine before, just olive oil, salt, flour and water. Today I used butter and baking powder like in your recipe, and they were delicious! One of the guys even grabbed an extra one to go, so he could enjoy it while it was still warm.
Hey Dianne,
Amazing! So glad to hear you enjoyed this recipe, I appreciate you giving it a try!
Have a great week!
I haven’t tried this recipe yet but would like to use it for a high school cooking class. Unfortunately we are limited on our time. Can you make the dough and then store it overnight in the refrigerator and then make the tortillas the next day?
Thanks!
Hey Donna,
How fun!! Yes, that will absolutely work for you:) Let me know how they turn out! xx
Mine did not come out like yours they came out a little fluffy more like pupusa I divided the dough into 14 equal pieces but they came out thick they started out thin, don’t know what I did wrong
Hi Deanna! To get thinner tortillas, try letting the dough rest a bit longer to relax the gluten and make sure your pan is hot before cooking. These little tweaks usually help achieve that soft, thin texture! Hope you enjoy! xT
Same. I think they take some real good rolling out but definitely a little difficult. What I did is tried rolling my last ones out paper thin then cut them out with a knife in circle form. That helped me since my edges were so thick with the first ones. Anyway great recipe like always from Half Baked HARVEST!
Can you freeze the rolled balls for later use once made? Or is it best to freeze the tortillas? Just trying to think of meal prep instead of doing the steps all at once.
Thank you
Hi Penny! Yes, you can definitely freeze the tortilla balls once made, then when you’re ready to use just thaw and let come to room temp completely before rolling them out and cooking! 🙂 xT
I made these today. So easy and so delicious! I bought a tortilla press hoping it would make things easier and boy am I glad I did!
Hi Tania! Thank you so so much! I’m so glad you loved these tortillas! Hopefully they will be a hit in your new house! xT
I have to admit, I was a little unsure how these were going to turn out. After reading all of the reviews, I ended up choosing coconut oil, 2 cups of AP flour and 1 cup of bread flour. I let the dough rest for a good 30 minutes. After resting, I weighed the dough and divided it into 14 equal size portions. I decided to roll and cook one at a time. The dough rolled out perfectly – didn’t spring back and I managed to get them pretty thin. My first couple were a little “iffy” but my technique got better with each tortilla. Watching them bubble up in the pan was sooooo satisfying and the whole process was fun! I am enjoying a breakfast quesadilla right now as I write this review and I’m giving this recipe a two thumbs up! Delish!
Hi Pamela! Yay!! So happy to hear these tortillas turned out well for you! I agree, watching the tortillas bubble up is sooo satisfying! Thanks for giving the recipe a try! xT
Soooo good! But I can’t get them nearly as thin as yours. I roll and they shrink back up like elastic. I’ve also tried a tortilla press. Any tricks?
Hey Rebekah! If your tortillas keep shrinking back as you roll them, the dough likely needs more rest. Be sure to use hot water when making the dough, as it helps keep it soft and easier to roll. After mixing, let the dough rest for at least 30 minutes, and again after dividing it into balls—this relaxes the gluten so it won’t snap back. Skip the tortilla press, which tends to tighten the dough even more, and use a rolling pin instead. Roll gently, flipping and rotating the dough as you go, using just a little flour to prevent sticking. These simple tweaks should help you get thinner, more flexible tortillas! xT
Can you freeze the dough to remake tortillas?
Hey Chelsea! Yes, you can absolutely freeze the dough and then just let it thaw and come to room temp before forming them into tortillas! 🙂 xT
How do you get the tortillas not to stick together after rolling out readying them for the skillet…you pile them up and they don’t stick together?
Hi Anne,
If they have enough flour on them they usually don’t stick, otherwise I just layer with parchment paper. I hope this helps!
I have tried other tortilla recipes and none of them compare to this one. I am a beginner in all things cooking and baking and this recipe was so easy, tasty, and fun to make. So happy to have a recipe that will for sure be a staple for my family. Thanks for sharing it!
Hi Clara! Thank you SO much! I’m so happy you’re enjoying these tortillas, makes me so happy to hear they’ve been easy and delicious for you! 🙂 xT
I’ve tried several tortilla recipes before, but this was my first successful batch! This produced a lovely dough. I’m excited to make them again!
