These Easy Homemade Flour Tortillas are so much better than anything from the store. Homemade tortillas are extra soft, doughy, and chewy. I like to add salted butter, for extra deliciousness. Fresh flour tortillas are so easy to make at home and pretty difficult to mess up. No yeast + no rising time = simple as can be!

When it comes to flour tortillas, I never thought I would care to take the time to make them at home. But after realizing just how simple they can be, I’ve been making them almost weekly. They’re pretty much a staple for our family’s Mexican dinners.

These are DELICIOUS, and like nothing you’ll find in the grocery store.

Homemade tortillas are softer, chewier, and you just can’t beat the flavor.

Details – mix the dough

Simply mix flour, baking powder, and salt together. Then, add softened butter and hot water. Mix this until a soft, shaggy dough forms, then use your hands to need the dough into a smooth ball.

Let the dough rest for 10 minutes to allow the gluten to settle.

Roll the dough out

Divide the dough into 12 to 14 dough balls, then roll each out using a rolling pin. If you have a tortilla press, that will make things very easy! I don’t have one, but it’s on my list of items to invest in.

I like to roll all the dough balls out before I start cooking any of the tortillas. This helps the cooking process go much easier and smoother.

Cook the tortillas

It’s best to use a cast-iron skillet if you can, then add a drizzle of olive oil. Most people don’t use oil to cook the tortillas, but I’ve found you get a much better outcome with just a small amount of oil in the pan.

Cook until bubbles appear on top. Then. just like a pancake, flip and cook until lightly golden.

These are delicious warm, right off the skillet. Fresh fajitas or tacos can also be stored for up to 3 days, or kept frozen for even longer!

These are also great with quesadillas, skillet verde chicken, chili, and more!

Ingredients

Instructions

  • 1. In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the butter, then pour over the hot water. Stir until a shaggy dough begins to form.
    2. Turn the dough out onto a floured counter. Use your hands to knead the dough for 1-2 minutes until it forms a smooth ball. Cover the bowl with a damp towel and let rest 10 minutes.
    3. Cut the dough into 12-14 equal wedges, then roll each wedge into a ball (they don't need to be perfect). Use a rolling pin or a tortilla press to roll the dough out into an 8 – inch circle.
    4. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add a small drizzle of olive oil, then a tortilla. Cook 30-60 seconds, until little bubbles appear on the surface. Flip and cook another 30 seconds, or until the bottom is slightly golden. Set on a plate and cover with a towel. Repeat with the remaining dough.
    5. Serve warm (yum!) or save for later. Keep the tortillas stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Notes

Butter: I like the flavor of butter best, but coconut oil can also be used.
Storage: the tortillas can be stored in a food storage bag at room temperature for up to 3 days, or frozen for up to 3 months.

  1. I followed the recipe and used my new cast iron press. The end results were hockey pucks. No bubbling during cooking. I couldn’t seem to get the balls flat enough, even added some water to see if that would help, and used my rolling pin after using the press. They are not thin and soft. What did I do wrong?

This is the only recipe I use ! Very delicious and with a lil bit of oil does make it better without a lil oil they come out drier and harder for some reason . My kids love them when made fresh ! Thank You!!:)

Loved the recipe. I rolled by hand with a french roller. You could divide into 6 for a burrito size. I did 12 and they were small taco size. Folded them in half and made quesadillas with Oaxaca cheese and bison (chuck roast in crock pot).

    1. Hey April,
Happy Sunday!! I appreciate you making this recipe and your comment, so glad to hear it turned out nicely for you! XxT

I am giving it four out of five stars because it makes flatbread and not tortillas. Which is going to work out great because my kids would love to have smaller versions of these to dip in their hummus.

I did use a tortilla press and they were really thin coming out of the press but as soon as I started pulling them off the parchment paper to cook them, they were shrinking. All of my tortillas ended up about 5-6″, so too small for an actual taco and also pretty thick. Obviously we are going to still eat them and the recipe will come in handy for snacks or making a lot bigger for flatbread sandwiches, but we will still be on the hunt for a good tortilla recipe.

    1. Hey Amy,
Happy Friday!! Thanks a lot for giving this recipe a try, so glad to hear it turned out well for you! XxT

This is my favorite tortilla recipe. Easy to prep, make, and cook. The family loves the authentic homemade taste and I enjoy the limited ingredients required to successfully make these delicious tortillas.

    1. Hey Nikki,
Wonderful! Thank you for making this recipe so often and your comment, so glad to hear it always turns out well for you! XxT

    2. This recipe makes a flat bread not tortillas. I have tried it a couple of times and the dough is way too thick.
I used a rolling pin and a press and no luck getting them to thin out.

    1. Hey Cherith,
Yes, a lot of readers have said this recipe works nicely with gluten free flour. Please let me know if you give it a try! xT

    2. The flavor is great. But I’m going to store this recipe as ‘flatbread’ because even with a press, they dont stay as tortillas. They shrink in and thicken up. I’ve tried everything.
But it IS a good flatbread. 🙂

Best recipe I’ve ever made! I used half water and half milk….delish! I struggled a little with getting it to bubble when cooking. I let the dough rest for several hours and that helped. Either way, they were awesome.

    1. Hey Rocio,
Fantastic! Love to hear this recipe turned out well for you, thanks for making it! Have the best week:) xxT

  9. I love this recipe for homemade tortillas. The flavor is delicious!
However, I can’t seem to get them to thin out in rolling or with our tortilla press (our preferred means as it is sooo much faster). They get down to the desired thinness, then bounce back into a thicker disk as soon as we remove them from the press or rolling out surface. Any recommendations?

    1. Hey Sarah,
So glad to hear you have been enjoying this recipe! Tortillas are so finicky, I feel like there really is no trick, I just keep flipping and rolling them thinner to get them as thin as I possibly can. I hope this helps! xT

      1. Tieghan
I rolled them out a couple times & then used my fingers to pinch the middle as thin as I wanted while squishing the excess dough outwards. Then I rolled them again starting from the middle out & they didn’t seem to pull back & thicken as much.

These were delicious and so easy to make but did sort of have a biscuit taste like I saw another review mention. I think maybe the butter gives it that flavor. Could you sub avocado oil for a more neutral flavor?

  11. I used unsalted butter to lower the sodium level and we still LOVED this recipe!!! I can’t wait to share them with friends and family!

    1. Hey Mari,
