These Easy Homemade Flour Tortillas are so much better than anything from the store. Homemade tortillas are extra soft, doughy, and chewy. I like to add salted butter, for extra deliciousness. Fresh flour tortillas are so easy to make at home and pretty difficult to mess up. No yeast + no rising time = simple as can be!

When it comes to flour tortillas, I never thought I would care to take the time to make them at home. But after realizing just how simple they can be, I’ve been making them almost weekly. They’re pretty much a staple for our family’s Mexican dinners.

These are DELICIOUS, and like nothing you’ll find in the grocery store.

Homemade tortillas are softer, chewier, and you just can’t beat the flavor.

Details – mix the dough

Simply mix flour, baking powder, and salt together. Then, add softened butter and hot water. Mix this until a soft, shaggy dough forms, then use your hands to need the dough into a smooth ball.

Let the dough rest for 10 minutes to allow the gluten to settle.

Roll the dough out

Divide the dough into 12 to 14 dough balls, then roll each out using a rolling pin. If you have a tortilla press, that will make things very easy! I don’t have one, but it’s on my list of items to invest in.

I like to roll all the dough balls out before I start cooking any of the tortillas. This helps the cooking process go much easier and smoother.

Cook the tortillas

It’s best to use a cast-iron skillet if you can, then add a drizzle of olive oil. Most people don’t use oil to cook the tortillas, but I’ve found you get a much better outcome with just a small amount of oil in the pan.

Cook until bubbles appear on top. Then. just like a pancake, flip and cook until lightly golden.

These are delicious warm, right off the skillet. Fresh fajitas or tacos can also be stored for up to 3 days, or kept frozen for even longer!

These are also great with quesadillas, skillet verde chicken, chili, and more!

Ingredients

Instructions

  • 1. In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the butter, then pour over the hot water. Stir until a shaggy dough begins to form.
    2. Turn the dough out onto a floured counter. Use your hands to knead the dough for 1-2 minutes until it forms a smooth ball. Cover the bowl with a damp towel and let rest 10 minutes.
    3. Cut the dough into 12-14 equal wedges, then roll each wedge into a ball (they don't need to be perfect). Use a rolling pin or a tortilla press to roll the dough out into an 8 – inch circle.
    4. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add a small drizzle of olive oil, then a tortilla. Cook 30-60 seconds, until little bubbles appear on the surface. Flip and cook another 30 seconds, or until the bottom is slightly golden. Set on a plate and cover with a towel. Repeat with the remaining dough.
    5. Serve warm (yum!) or save for later. Keep the tortillas stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Notes

Butter: I like the flavor of butter best, but coconut oil can also be used.
Storage: the tortillas can be stored in a food storage bag at room temperature for up to 3 days, or frozen for up to 3 months.

  1. I’m still learning the process of using a tortilla press and had super thick tortillas 🤷🏼‍♀️. Maybe next time I use a hybrid method of rolling out and using a tortilla press. The more I stretched the dough the closer they got to the right thinness. They tasted great though so I will definitely try again!

    1. Hi Vanessa,
Thanks so much for making this recipe, I’m so glad to hear they were enjoyed! I’ve never used a tortilla press, I just roll them by hand so let me know if that works better for you next time! xx

In college we went to a spring break cottage gathering in Mexico, Rocky Point. Very rustic cottage. Not ideal for cooking. Our first morning a woman came to the door selling her freshly made tortillas. The aroma alone was worth the purchase. She rolled them very very thin, yet they were not crumbly. Most likely lard was in there. I am going back now, over 46 years… The only tweak I would make for your recipe is guidance for how thin to roll them, especially as you hand roll them. Keep the edges from getting too thick and the middle too thin. any tricks you have for that would be great! xo

    1. Thanks so much! So glad to hear this recipe turned out well for you, I appreciate you making it! I just keep rolling and turning the dough. Thanks for sharing this story:) Happy Holidays! xx

This was our second attempt at tortillas but the first time using your recipe. These turned out great and were easier to roll out than the other recipe we tried. No problems at all as long as you are patient with the process. We added in a little sourdough starter because we had some left over (1/4 C) just for fun.
Will definitely make these again. All ingredients are always in the pantry unlike some of the other tortilla recipes out there. Thanks Tiegan….Happy Holidays

  4. As a first-time tortilla maker, I was hesitant…but this recipe was SUPER easy, quick and tasted delicious!!!
Can the dough itself could be frozen to store??…
    10/10 definitely recommend. Thank you!

    1. Thanks so much, Anderson:) I am so glad to hear you loved this recipe, I appreciate you making it and sharing what worked well for you! Yes, you could definitely freeze the dough. Happy Monday! xT

I had to make these a couple of times to get it just right and make adjustments, but once I got it down it works. I’m about to try with coconut oil instead of butter… I’m assuming follow all of the steps as if I’m using butter?

    1. Hi Kenneth,
Thanks so much for making this recipe! Yes, you can follow the recipe as written using the coconut oil. I hope it turns out well! xx

    1. Hey Hannah,
Happy Holidays!! I’m so glad you enjoyed this recipe and appreciate you making it! Thanks for your comment:) xx

  6. I made these today and by necessity had to add wheat flour ( I doubled the recipe). Rolled them out thin and cooked them and they came out perfect to use for enchiladas and wraps! Thank you for the recipe!!

    1. Hey Sabrina,

I’d agree with Erica, I tried making these tortillas and they came out very thick and would spring back even after using a rolling pin. I tried my tortilla press but that didn’t work either. Pretty bummed out :/

    1. Hi Francisco,
Thanks so much for trying this recipe and sharing your feedback. It sounds like your dough needs to rest a little longer. I hope this helps! xx

    Loved this recipe!

A few things I did differently

I used 2 cups of flour instead of 3
I put butter in the cup of hot water first to let it melt
I used my kitchen aid pasta roller attachment to help roll the tortillas! I’ve made tortillas many times but just thought to try it tonight and worked like a charm.

This is the recipe I always come back to 😊

    1. Hey Kayla,
Amazing! Thanks a lot for trying this recipe, so glad to hear it turned out nicely for you! Thanks for sharing your tips! Happy Thanksgiving! xx

Agree with others in that this is more like naan/pita than tortilla. I used a tortilla press and no mater how much I pressed the dough sprung back. If longer rest time is the key, than my dough should rest for a really long time. They worked despite the lack of thinness but if I really needed thin tortillas, I’d need to find a different recipe.

    1. Hi Erica,
Thanks for making this recipe and sharing your feedback. I’m sorry, but I’ve used a tortilla press so I can’t speak to that, but I would suggest rolling them by hand so you can get them super thin. I hope this helps! xx

These tortillas have become a regular part of family meals. My four kids (7, 10, 12 and 14) love them, as do my husband and I. They elevate a simple fajita or quesadilla into something special.

    1. Aww, love to hear this, Priscilla! I’m so glad your family loves these tortillas, thanks for making them so often! xx

I’ve made these twice. And the flavor is really good but both times I made the recipe they looked more like thick naan and were very difficult to fold and eat no matter how flat we rolled them, they puffed up in the pan. Definitely not tortilla consistency

    1. Hi there,
Thanks so much for trying this recipe!! They can definitely be tricky to get thin, I would try letting the dough rest a bit longer next time to see if that helps! xx

I literally can’t eat store bought tortillas anymore! These are amazing and work like a charm for anything from quesadillas to wraps! It also keeps well in the refrigerator when wrapped and put in an air tight container, and makes packing school lunches a breeze! Thank you so much for the recipe.

    1. Thanks so much, Mithila:) I’m so glad to hear you have been enjoying these tortillas and appreciate you making them so often! XxT

My entire family loved it. And it’s so simple and takes not time to make. We definitely will not be buying store bought any more. I do have one question though, can the dough be made just before bedtime and then rolled out in the morning for breakfast? Id like to be able to just roll when I’m ready without skipping the rest time as I know it’s important for gluten factor. But I am a busy working Mom of 4 so any pre prep is more than welcomed.

    1. You absolutely can! Cover in a cling wrap and keep it in an air tight container in the refrigerator, bring it to room temperature and you’re good to go.

    2. Hey there,
So glad you enjoyed these tortillas, thanks so much for giving them a try! Yes, that will work nicely for you, just keep the dough wrapped tightly in plastic wrap so it does not dry out. I hope this helps! xx

    1. Hi Cathy,
Awesome!! So glad to hear this recipe was enjoyed. I appreciate you giving it a try and your feedback! Have the best day! XxT
