These Easy Homemade Flour Tortillas are so much better than anything from the store. Homemade tortillas are extra soft, doughy, and chewy. I like to add salted butter, for extra deliciousness. Fresh flour tortillas are so easy to make at home and pretty difficult to mess up. No yeast + no rising time = simple as can be!

When it comes to flour tortillas, I never thought I would care to take the time to make them at home. But after realizing just how simple they can be, I’ve been making them almost weekly. They’re pretty much a staple for our family’s Mexican dinners.
These are DELICIOUS, and like nothing you’ll find in the grocery store.
Homemade tortillas are softer, chewier, and you just can’t beat the flavor.

Simply mix flour, baking powder, and salt together. Then, add softened butter and hot water. Mix this until a soft, shaggy dough forms, then use your hands to need the dough into a smooth ball.
Let the dough rest for 10 minutes to allow the gluten to settle.

Divide the dough into 12 to 14 dough balls, then roll each out using a rolling pin. If you have a tortilla press, that will make things very easy! I don’t have one, but it’s on my list of items to invest in.
I like to roll all the dough balls out before I start cooking any of the tortillas. This helps the cooking process go much easier and smoother.

It’s best to use a cast-iron skillet if you can, then add a drizzle of olive oil. Most people don’t use oil to cook the tortillas, but I’ve found you get a much better outcome with just a small amount of oil in the pan.
Cook until bubbles appear on top. Then. just like a pancake, flip and cook until lightly golden.
These are delicious warm, right off the skillet. Fresh fajitas or tacos can also be stored for up to 3 days, or kept frozen for even longer!
These are also great with quesadillas, skillet verde chicken, chili, and more!

Hey Cecile,
Happy Friday!! I appreciate you making this recipe and your comment, love to hear that it turned out well! xx
I grew up with homemade tortillas and these tasted exactly like them. I made them twice, the first time with butter and the second with coconut oil. I liked the coconut oil better.

I have made these about a dozen times and they turn out perfect every time! We rarely buy store bought tortillas anymore because they just don’t compare. Word of caution – I did once use bakers flour instead of all purpose as I was out and my tacos were really dry so definitely stick to the all purpose flour for these!
Hey Ingrid,
Wonderful! So glad to hear that this recipe is always enjoyed, thank you so much for making it so often! Happy Sunday! xT
INCREDIBLY easy to follow along and do!! Thank you for your recipe; it tasted absolutely delicious!! Not sure what the negative comments are going on about; maybe they just don’t know how to properly roll out a tortilla or cook? Mine came out perfectly thin and super tasty. Wasn’t anything like a flatbread, or dense/hard in the slightest. We used them for our fish tacos and they were superb! Definitely keeping this recipe, thank you!
Hey Iri,
I appreciate you trying this recipe and your comment, so glad to hear it turned out well! Happy Labor Day Weekend! xx
The dough is too thick. Can I add a little more water to get a thinner tortilla?
Hi Andrea,
If the dough has already been kneaded I wouldn’t add more water to it. Try letting it rest for a little and then go back to rolling them out. I hope this helps! xT
Tried these to ight they were amazing even my kids are them which is insane my husband absolutely loved them 😍
So glad to hear this, Adrianna! Love to hear that these tortillas turned out nicely for you, I appreciate you making them! xx

Awesome! Love to hear that you enjoyed this recipe, thanks for making it and your comment! xT
The best recipe I have tried. A few changes; I used unsalted butter and swapped out cream of tartar and baking soda instead of baking powder. I cannot use baking powder due to Chronic Kidney disease.
Thank you.
Hey Jean,
Happy Monday! I am thrilled to hear this recipe was a hit, thanks for making it and your feedback! xT
I love this recipe!! However, if you add a Tbs of sugar, you get a true flower tortilla taste!!!!
Forgot to add the 5 star ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thanks again:)
Thanks so much, Jacqueline! Have a great Sunday! xT
I am shocked by low ratings for this recipe. I thought the dough was easy to work. My tortillas rolled out easily and even though I got them super thin, I was able to pick them up and place them in the pan. I am not good with a rolling pin so mine were a bit irregular unlike Tieghan’s perfect circles, but otherwise they were exactly as described. I would highly recommend this recipe.
Hi Rose,
Fantastic! Thanks so much for trying this recipe and your comment, so glad it was delish! Have a great weekend:) x
Did everything to a T! Rolled out as thin as possible to where I could see through it, and still didn’t work. It turned out more like flatbread than a tortilla. I swear people that blog recipes always skip the one step that makes it like the pictures. No bubbles, no nothing for me.
Hi Billy,
Thanks for trying this recipe and sharing your feedback, sorry to hear you had some issues. Did you use a super hot cast iron skillet? xx
Keep them covered. I stack in a plate and cover with a kitchen towel to keep that heat in. It steams them and makes them bendable.
Hope this helps
They are doughy and fun. However, I used semolina flour because of my gluten sensitivity. Italian flour doesn’t upset my stomach. I also used unsalted butter and cut the recipe into 1/3rd to test my own skills in making them. I feel like I should’ve added a little extra salt, but the group loved them. I made a burrito with one and it held up entirely.
Hey Colin,
Fantastic!! So glad to hear that you enjoyed this recipe! I appreciate you giving it a try! xT
Hi! Would almond flour or a gluten-free flour work with this recipe? Thanks! 😊
Hi Becky,
Sure, you could use an equal amount of gluten free flour. Please let me know if you have any other questions! xT
Awful. Baking powder made them so thick. Not needed. They taste more like Lunchables pizza crust. Disappointed.
Agreed! They are NOT tortillas.
I thought I made them wrong. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who thought this.
