Crockpot Creamy French Onion Chicken and Orzo. This comforting French onion chicken dish is cooked with white wine, herbs, and butter, then served over a creamy parmesan orzo, it’s so delish. And it’s all made in the crockpot for an easy dinner recipe to have on rotation. It’s the perfect hearty and delicious meal to enjoy on busy nights.

I’ve entered my “cozy” mode and it’s in full force this season. Our weather has been beautifully sunny this week, but cold at night. It’s been so chilly that everything in the greenhouse froze over the weekend.
This has me craving cozier fall food. And with the beginning of October this Sunday, I imagine I’m not the only one!
You seem to really enjoy my simple, all-in-one crockpot dinners, so I’ve been brainstorming what new flavors and variations to share with you all.
I have so many great recipes coming up! It’s going to be yummy!
But for today, we have one that everyone will enjoy. It’s like a French onion soup, but made with chicken and served with a side of creamy parmesan orzo.
It is so delicious!

Ingredients
Step 1: layer everything in the crockpot
It’s important to layer this dish in order. Arranging the onions on the bottom of the crockpot will ensure they receive the most amount of heat, which is ideal. We want the crockpot to really get the onions very, very soft.
Layer as follows, onions, butter, then chicken. Now, I love to add a sprinkle of thyme and sage. I usually use fresh, but dried herbs will work really well in this recipe. Then add some garlic, salt, and pepper.
Pour over dry white wine and add some mushrooms. Then start cooking. Go low and slow for 3-4 hours or on high for 1-2. Either or is totally great!

Step 2: mix in the orzo
When the chicken is cooked, pull both the chicken and onions out of the crockpot and set on a baking sheet.
Now mix the orzo into the crockpot. Add some water and let the orzo cook.
Step 3: broil the chicken and cheese
Next, add butter to the onions on the pan, and cheese to the chicken. Broil until the cheese is very melty.
During this time, the onions should darken a bit in color.

Step 4: finish the orzo
Mix the parmesan cheese into the orzo.
It will be very creamy.

Step 5: serve and enjoy
Serve the creamy orzo topped with the onions and chicken. I add fresh thyme or parsley too.
Serve this with a bright salad. This pretty harvest salad has been my go-to in the fall. Ooh, and maybe some crusty bread too! Yum!

Disappointed. Didn’t turn out at all.
Slow cooked for 4 hours.
Orzo for 30… starch ruined sauce… and pasta is still undercooked.
Did not ensure chicken was cooked before broiling… cut in to eat and it’s raw in the middle.
Now trying to figure out how to salvage a recipe that costs at least $30.
Hi Kaitlyn,
So very sorry to hear this recipe did not work for you! Was there anything you possibly adjusted? Any chance your slow cooker might be having some issues? Regardless of the dish, 4 hours is plenty of time for chicken to cook through. Let me know how I can help! xx
We made this recipe tonight using the stove top method and it was amazing! To those who said the onions were undercooked, please try on a stovetop! We also used chicken thighs are much harder to dry out with longer cooking times. Great flavor and perfect for fall. This one was a winner in our book!
Hey Tiffany,
Happy Monday!! Love to hear that this recipe turned out well for you, thanks for trying and your feedback! xT
I did the crockpot and it turned out so well!! Only thing I changed was I didn’t add that much water and I cooked the chicken onion mix for 3.5 hours on low.
Hey Paisley,
Happy Sunday!!🍂 Thanks a bunch for making this recipe and your review, so glad it was enjoyed:) xx
Not the best. First let me say I love all of your recipes but this one was unfortunately a miss. Biggest issue was the onions, they didn’t caramelize & were undercooked. I had to put them in a pan to cook more. Chicken was dry. Orzo was fine but a little soupy & didn’t thicken. Overall not a ton of flavor either.
Hi Alexandra,
Thanks for trying this dish and sharing your feedback, so sorry to hear it wasn’t enjoyed! xT
A good cozy meal for fall! We subbed coconut milk for the heavy cream. We had trouble caramelizing the onions in the oven, they were a little undercooked- I think next time I might caramelize the onions in a pan the traditional way to get the right flavor.
We didn’t add any extra liquid with the orzo and it was moist with a little extra sauce to drizzle over the chicken!
Thank you so much for giving the recipe a try! Have a Happy Halloween! 🙂 xT
This was very good. Made in the slow cooker. I did not have the liquid problems others mentioned. In fact, mine probably could have used a bit more liquid. My chicken ended up being a tad dry. But the orzo was so good.
This recipe was very yummy! Thank you for sharing. I will be making this one again. 😁
Thanks so much for trying out the recipe! 🙂 xT
Terrible recipe. Idk how folks rated it so highly. It came out bland and tasteless. I even used a fine bottle of white wine from a local winery and pink oyster mushrooms I grew myself. I spent 4 hours making what I thought would be an amazing dish and it was awful. Stop now.. turn back… don’t waste your ingredients or money on this awful recipe. It’s pretty clear it was never even fully tested considering they don’t mention what to do with the Parmesan or mushrooms for the one pot version. This is a terrible AI recipe remake… you have been warned
Hey Chris! I am SO sorry this recipe didn’t turn out for you! Thank you for the feedback, I really appreciate it. I will look more into this recipe and how it can be improved! xT
Do you think this would work in the instant pot? Thanks!
Hi Jessica! Yes, that should work well! xT
I’m eating this as I type this. It’s another winner! I had low expectations because of some of the other reviews, but mine turned out perfectly. My slow cooker has a brown/saute function and I used this to bring the sauce to boil and cook the orzo. I’ll definitely make this again!
Hi! So glad to hear you enjoyed the recipe! Thanks for trying it out! xT
We LOVED this recipe! I didn’t have white wine on hand so just put in a little extra broth. Some reviews are saying there was too much liquid- I ended up NOT including the cup of water with the orzo and it turned out perfectly. Tons of flavor, filling and makes great leftovers.
Hi! So glad to hear you enjoyed the recipe! Thanks for trying it out! xT
These instructions aren’t the clearest. The directions start using different terminology halfway through. Are the onions in the pan supposed to be the onions and the chicken on the baking sheet or the onions and mushrooms in the pot? Are the mushrooms supposed to be separated out from everything at a certain point as a reserve? It has some information in the blog part, but the instructions are very unclear.
I did like this recipe though the heavy cream and parm did not thicken up the liquid. I did use penne but not knowing how much liquid I followed the recipe and added the 1 cup of water. I would not do that next time. Everyone enjoyed it nonetheless and the leftovers will be delicious today!
Thank you for the feedback Dawn! xT
It ended up being like soup. I was trying to make the orzo a thicker consistency but couldn’t achieve it so I threw the chicken, onions and cheese into the pot too. The onions didn’t caramelize. I followed the stove top instructions.
Hi Kristina! Thank you for letting me know! I’m so sorry you didn’t enjoy this recipe! xT
I made the crockpot version.
I felt the same as other reviewers. The onions do not get caramelized cooking them in the crockpot. I also was unhappy of how dry my chicken breast were. I cooked them on low for 3 hours. The flavor of the dish was fantastic! Would even be better with caramelized onions!
Hey Michelle! I’m so sorry about that! Thank you for letting me know! xT
