Guys, we have serious, serious things to chat about today.

My Favorite Slow Roasted Pork Carnitas | halfbakedharvest.com @hbharvest

Number one is obviously these carnitas. These extra special, super delicious slow roasted pork carnitas.

And two? Well two is about what’s been on my mind recently. Let’s start with two, and then we’ll move on to the carnitas. Promise, I will try not to write a novel…

So lately I’ve been I wanting to do more with the blog. I need a little more of a challenge, something new, something different, and I feel like the blog needs a little update. I’d like you to let me know what you’d like to see more of on HBH. Is it super easy recipes? More quick how-to videos? Longer videos… where I talk and talk and talk? Do you like hearing all about my life and what’s happening behind the scenes? Or would you prefer for me to simply stick to content? How about some lifestyle posts? Would you be into fashion inspired posts? If so, what areas? I really want to know what you’d love to see me share? I want to go there, to add something new and fun and fresh and different! So please… give me your thoughts, ideas, comments… I want to hear them all!

PS. the fashion thing?? Anyone? You know my whole life I thought I was going to work in the fashion industry, but then my move to LA happened and I kind of freaked, and then this blog happened. Now I only buy dishes and surfaces, and only wear Lululemon tights and sweatshirts smeared with chocolate all day long…I wouldn’t mind bringing a little fashion back into my world. Would you guys be into it? My favorite trends? My wish list? Maybe some go-to working girl outfits? Maybe only as a monthly thing, or maybe more? Thoughts?!?!

PSS. What about entertaining posts!?! I’m really into these. Like dinner parties, summer get-togethers, cocktails… Would you be interested in seeing more of these types of posts?

OKok, and now let’s chat carnitas!!!

The pork gets slow cooked for two to three hours and when it’s finished, it literally just falls apart. The shredded meat makes for the most epic round of tacos, complete with all the toppings. The meat just melts in your mouth and the flavor is insane.

Like nothing better.

Also, while this meat is great for tacos, it’s also great for burrito bowls, nachos, pizza, quesadillas, sandwiches, ext…the options here are endless. With this carnita recipe, you really can do no wrong! 🙂

The one must? A side of guacamole and chips.

Instructions

Classic Slow Roasted On the Stove

  • Toss the cubed pork with the garlic powder and chipotle chili powder. Season liberally with salt and pepper.
  • Heat a large dutch oven over medium high heat. Sear the pork on all sides. If needed, sear the pork in batches if your dutch oven is not large enough. Reduce the heat low and pour in the beer, orange juice and 1/2 cup water (there should be just enough liquid to cover the sides of the meat). Add the bay leaves. Bring the mixture to a boil and then reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 1 1/2 hours on LOW. After 1 1/2 hours the pork should be falling apart. Remove the lid and continue cooking another 30 minutes. The Coca-Cola will caramelize and the liquid will evaporate almost completely.
  • Transfer the pork to a cutting board and shred. Drizzle the carnitas with lime juice. Serve with warm tortillas, avocado and cheese. EAT!

Crockpot

Transfer the pork to the bowl of your crockpot. Add the beer, orange juice, 1/2 cup water and the bay leaves. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours. During the last hour, remove the lid and allow the liquid to evaporate almost completely.

  1. Carnitas are my love language and these look amazing!

I would love to see entertaining/dinner party posts–those are always really inspiring to me. Also, it was super fun hearing you on the FBP podcast, and I’d love to see posts about your food photography & styling or maybe behind-the-scenes videos related to that :).

      1. Thanks Holly! I think I am going to try and do some of the behind the scenes of myself shooting!! Thank you!

    1. HI!! Thank you! I’m so happy you like the Carnitas!!

I am going to try and do more entertainment stuff!! And most definitely behind the scenes stuff!!

I’ve had a few comments about the podcast and I’m glad you liked it!!

      Thanks Becky!!

  2. Hey T,
I totally get self-doubt issues (I like wrote the book) but you should know that you have no reason to! I have been following your blog since I first started discovering the world of food blogging and it’s been at the top of my go-to list for inspiration. I’m not kidding girl, you don’t know how many people you inspire every single day.

Also, the possibility of you getting into some fashion stuff has me super excited! Do IT! Don’t hold back just because you feel insecure because we all love your work and it only keeps getting better!!!

    1. Hi Tori!! I love seeing your comments all the time BTW!
Thank you so much!! It means a lot to hear this!

Ah the fashion! So nervous about it, but I think I’m ready to try it out!! So be on the lookout!!

      Thanks!!!!!

  3. Another huge fan of your blog right here! Every morning, around 11 in the UK, I check in for a new recipe. I love that you’re so consistent in posting everyday – a real inspiration for other food bloggers.
Would love more lifestyle posts especially about where you live – it sounds beautiful. And your food is perfect, keep it coming! Ooh, you could do a post about how you started blogging plus tips for other bloggers out there? Even some behind-the-scenes as to how you shoot those amazing photos? Have a lovely day! 🙂

    1. Hi!!! Thank you!!! This means so much to me!!

I think lifestyle type stuff is something I am very interested in doing in the near future!!
A post about how I started is a GREAT idea that I think I will try to do!

Behind the scenes is something I would really like to incorporate in as wee!! So be on the lookout!!

Thank you!! Have an amazing day!!

  4. Your blog was the first blog I started reading, when I found out food blogs were a thing, and the one I go to everyday at 9am just to read what you’ve come up with (still wonder how you do it).
What I love about this blog is the dedication that you put into it, and the love for what you do and that’s what I think makes HBH special for me.
So I think if you’d like to talk about fashion you should, and I’m all for the entertainment kind of posts and some behind the scenes. The recipes are just perfect as they are 🙂
Oh and so excited for your book can’t wait!!

    1. Wow!! So awesome thank you!!

I love that you appreciate all that I put into the blog!! So cool!!

I cant wait for the book to be done and to share with you all.I am looking into the best ways to incorporate fashion and a few other ideas into the blog to keep it fresh, but I love that YOU love the recipes!

      Thanks so much Beatriz (:

  5. Oh my, I don’t know what to say… I like your blog the way it is, I love the food – most of it! – that you post here and that has inspired me into trying stuf, or adapting stuff, or just plain cooking stuff differently – that cashew chicken, for instance, I did my own version and am I glad I devoured that post of yours! So, truly I come here for the food, you know… I’m very much into fashion – used to have a fashion blog! – but I am more into styyle as I have such a well set and defined personal style I really don’t care about trends. I don’t entertain anymore, so I would be at a loss with those posts, but some might be quite interesting, actually. I don’t always leave a comment as somedays I’m really pressed for time (my own blog, and trying to write two novels on top of homemaking and a small boy that needs seeing to) but I try to comment most days. Like these carnitas, I mean, they make me want to board the first flight there and eaaaaaaat. Non stop eating, you know?

    1. Hi Miranda!! Thank you so much for the nice words!!

Food will always be the backbone of this blog!! But I think the fashion and behind the scenes stuff could be fun too!

I love when I see your comments!! Especially knowing that you made time to leave them with all that you have on your plate!! Thats amazing!!

      Thank you so so much!

  6. Tieghan, I don’t think you have anything to worry about with your blog, I almost want to say don’t change a thing cause it’s perfect what you’re doing. Just because maybe here & there you don’t get alot of comments , it does not mean that you don’t have alot of followers. Cause seriously… you do. look above & below my comment! …. and these are people from all over the world!, that’s saying something!!!
I love your combination of flavors, and all your food ideas, it’s so creative & different & really stands out from alot of other websites/ bloggers, that’s why this is the “one” website I keep coming back to. It’s like, i don’t want to try one or two of your recipes…. I want to make all of them. And of course you tie up the whole package with beautiful photography.
So, yeah… I’m gonna say it … don’t change a thing cause what your doing is perfect.
And we’re all waiting for your book!

    All the best,
    Karen.

    1. It means so much to hear comments like this Karen!!

Hearing comments like yours is what motivates me!!

Don’t change a thing!!! So awesome! Literally the best compliment!

      Thank you Karen?

  7. Hi Tieghan!

I’ve been following your blog for probably almost 2-3 years now, and you’re still my go-to food blog (over a lot of others!!) every time I sit down to eat a meal because I just like to look at your beautiful, appetizing pictures since it seems to make my food taste better! (Dorm food, ugh) But really, I’ve never come across a food blog so passionate or wildly creative. The other blogs I follow hardly post and this is kind of disappointing since I like waking up to a new recipe everyday. The fact that you’re practically my age makes me feel insecure about what I’ve been doing with my life since you’ve already accomplished so much at such a young age! You’ve chosen to work on your passions and it shows- you have the best food pictures out there I’m not even kidding. These could be in a magazine! And the fact that you photograph like a pro without having studied photography? In. Sane. And don’t get me started on how you come up with such amazing dishes- so classy and gourmet but soul food-y at the same time. Girl you are a force to be reckoned with, please don’t feel insecure!! Keep doing what you love and do best and I swear good things will follow. Your talents are awe inspiring. Love from the Philippines- yes you have reached us too!! (I recommend you to all my fellow foodie friends) xxx

    1. I realize I didn’t comment on the new content ideas: Literally anything and everything you want to do. Lay it all here! I’d love to see all the things you mentioned, though I have to say I wish you had a YouTube channel sometimes so we can see you in action! That said, it would be nice to see you and hear your voice. Also, love hearing about your life. Xxx

    2. WOW Andrea, this is so incredibly nice, and honestly so lifting!! ??
I seriously would not worry about anything!! I know you will find exactly what you want to do!!
Hearing this made me so so happy! And the fact that I have you following from the Philippines is SO so cool!!

I’m excited to try some of your suggestions!! So please let me know what you think because your input is very important to me?

      Thank you Andrea

  8. Dear Tieghan,
First: I think you are doing an amazing job and are incredibely talented, creative and hard-working. I can’t imagine how you manage to post new recipes with beautiful photography 6x a week while writing a cookbook as well. So, as far as I am concerned, you do not have to change anything – I enjoy your recipes (and have cooked many) and love the little stories from your world.
But someone once said that people ultimitely read for the ‘voice’, or the personality behind the words. Which means I am sure I will enjoy anything you choose to write about (entertaining sounds fun and I have enjoyed your themed posts in the past (Christmas or picnic on a hike…) and will continue to follow.
I understand about insecuritites and (as my husband often reminds me) tend always to see what I have not done yet, instead of being happy about all that I have accomplished ( I published my first gardening book last year :-)). So I know it helps to hear it from somebody else: Tieghan, you’re doing great!
    Love from the Netherlands,
    Vera

    1. Hi Vera!!
      Thank you so much!!
It’s hard once you get used to what your doing!! I feel like it’s not enough anymore!! I’m excited to hear that you will continue to follow with whatever I decide to do!! It really does help to hear that!! Wow, and all the way from the Netherlands! AMAZING!!

  9. Hey Tieghan,

I am following you blog for a while now. I usually don’t comment however. I keep in the quiet. However, I am always excited to check my phone around 11 am (I live in Berlin, Germany) to see what new recipe you just posted. I really like your ideas. So do my friends and family when I try the recipes with them or translate them. Thank you for so many interesting and most of time easy ideas that taste great.

I am not so much into fashion blogs, but I guess a post on fashion from you once in a while doesn’t hurt. 😉 Especially since you seem to love fashion. I would like to read more on the development of your recipes. Do you get them while you eat in restaurants? Do you get them whilst scrolling through Instagram/Pinterest etc.? Also, I am interested in what kind of crockery you use for your pictures. I noticed “Staub” a few times. Another thing I would be happy to read about is entertainment posts. Like you suggested. How would you assemble some of your older/recent posts for special occasions? The kind of posts you have written multiple times already. I quite like seeing dishes put together, cos I find it hard myself to select “fitting” dishes for occasions.

Again, thank you for soooo many wonderful recipes. I have tried food because of you which I used to dislike and now enjoy once in a while (spinach!!) or have never tried before (Almond milk – I came to looove it!)

Keep up the great work! 🙂
    Kerstin

    1. Hey Kerstin!

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment, it means SOOO much!! I love all your suggestions and will try to do my best to bring them into my content in the next few months!! Again, thank you so much, your words and thoughts mean so much! 🙂 Have a great Friday!!

  10. Hey Tieghan!
I am not a long time reader, I’ve just started getting your emails this week after I listened to your podcast interview on FBP and I already can’t believe how MUCH you post…it’s amazing! I’ve totally stalked your blog this week and I am obsessed with your photos…I can honestly say I’ve never felt more inspired, so THANK YOU!! Even though I am still figuring out this whole food blogger thing and I obviously love recipe posts, I really enjoy reading lifestyle posts, especially from people who love on the other side of the world from me! And yes, entertaining, fashion, whatever you want to post about I am sure it will be fab, and if you are posting about something you are super passionate about we will all love it! Love your work, can’t wait to see what comes next!
    Laura from New Zealand 🙂
PS I love your barn, I 100% would love to renovate and live in one too #lifegoals

    1. Hi Laura!! So awesome!! Thank you so much!! I am so happy you found my blog??
It’s so nice to hear that you trust me with whatever I want to post about!! But when I do I’d also love to hear your feedback!!?

All the way over in NZ!? I’m so jealous! Looks amazingly pretty from what I have seen!!! Maybe we can trade for a bit? Ha ha. My brothers Red and Brendan loved it over there as well.

      Thanks so much Laura!

  11. Hi Tieghan,

Thanks for all the effort you put into your blog posts. Your recipes are intriguing and your photos are always top notch.

In addition to the types of recipes you already write, I would love to see some quick recipes with easy to find ingredients. I live in Germany and some specialty ingredients you like to feature like edible flowers and honeycomb are not easy to find here. As much as I’d love to try making those recipes, I just can’t find those ingredients.

Keep up the good work and stay true to yourself!

    1. Hi Meredith!! This is perfect!! I think I do need more simpler post so I will absolutely be looking to do this in the near future!!
Thank you so much for the kind words?

  12. Love, love, love your blog. I am NEVER one to comment but you asked for it! Would like some entertaining ideas because that is one of the main reasons we cook. Good food, good friends, family gatherings or just a romantic dinner for two. Keep up the good work!

    1. Hi Brenda!! I know!! I wanted to hear from you!!! I am totally going to do more entertainment stuff so be on the lookout!!
      Thank you!!!

  13. Hi, I am a loooong-time reader of your blog, but have rarely commented *sorry*. Thus your post made me feel a little guilty. I love that you share so much of yourself and I have huge respect for what you have achieved with your blog. I hope you continue to share your life with us and post stories.

I would love to know (in either writing or even video) what inspires you and how you come up with ideas. It would also be great (not sure if it’s technically possible) to get a video of how you do a photoshoot. Maybe you do a lot of this on snapchat but I really don’t want to get another social media black hole 😉 Maybe upload them on your instagram account, too?

As for recipes I could always use some ideas for great, easy meals to take to work and that are tasty and perfect if you can only heat them up in a microwave. Not sure if it could work in practice but reader’s could submit like an “ingredients list” you cook something nice with it. Or do a meal of things that are right this moment in your fridge, so a spontaneous cooking session.

Anyway, whatever you decide on. I am extremely happy with your blog as it is but whatever you come up with I am sure I will love it as well.

    1. Hi Kat!! I didn’t mean to make you feel guilty!!! I just hoped to hear from long time readers and get their opinions ? TOTALLY worked, and I’m so happy about it!!

I think it could be fun to write about some of my inspirations, I will try to include that in future post, great suggestion!!

I might possibly have to get my brother out here to do a video of the shooting process I go through?!

That’s a really cool idea!! Simpler recipes are already in the works and a submission type post could be really engaging and fun for me as well!!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read and comment!!?

  14. Hi tieghan!

I just wanted to let you know that I’m absolutely in love with ur blog !! Every morning at 10-11 am (Belgium hours) I get excited cause a new post pops up on half baked harvest. Hehe, I may sound like a freak, but I’m just such a fan.

Next, I would love to get to know more of ur life. Since I’m foodblogging myself (just starting), I’d really like to see how you come up with stuff, how you inspire yourself, how your days are planned and stuff.

Fashion and entertainment posts are definitely awesome as well !!
    Don’t get insecure ?

    1. Thats so amazing!! ?

I think I will try and include a lot more the behind the scene type stuff in future posts.

So glad to hear you’re open to fashion and entertainment posts as well (:

Thanks so much for your comment Eva!
