Homemade Baked Frosted Chocolate Donuts. I recreated a sweet donut that we all grew up eating! These yummy chocolate frosted donuts are so much better than store-bought and simple to make too! They’re baked with Greek yogurt and maple syrup to sweeten just slightly. Each donut is then dipped into a creamy chocolate glaze that melts in your mouth. These frosted chocolate doughnuts are totally delicious, fun to make, and even better to enjoy!

I always love to end the week with something sweet, so I’m excited to share these donuts! Everyone’s had a frosted chocolate donut from the store. I’m picturing the donuts in the white and blue box, the ones from Entenmann’s! I feel like they were such a childhood staple. Even though it was only on rare occasions that my mom would buy them, they were always such a nice surprise for my brothers and me!

One of my favorite things to do in the kitchen is to recreate treats I enjoyed as a kid! I always have so much fun with these recipes!

These donuts took no effort at all! They’re so easy to mix up, and they come out much better than anything from a box – promise.

Plus, you can double up on the delicious chocolate glaze when you make these donuts at home! I always felt like donuts from the store were lacking in the glaze. Making them at home easily solves those issues!

Of course, these are much healthier too! They’re made with Greek yogurt and very little sugar, and you can even use whole wheat flour! We all adore a healthier homemade treat!

Here are the details

Ingredients

  • Salted butter
  • Maple syrup
  • Greek yogurt
  • Eggs
  • Vanilla extract
  • All-purpose or whole wheat flour
  • Baking powder
  • Baking soda
  • Salt
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Avocado oil – or you can use melted butter if needed

Special Tools

For this donut recipe, you’ll need a donut pan to bake the donuts since they are non-fried. If you do not have a donut pan, I recommend using a mini muffin pan or regular muffin pan.

Steps

Step 1: make the batter

I wanted to do my best to make these donuts healthier. First, I start with some brown butter. Then I add a touch of maple syrup to lightly sweeten the donut.

From here, mix the eggs with Greek yogurt and vanilla.

For the flour, I like to use all-purpose or whole wheat flour. If you use whole wheat, the donuts will be a little more dense, which is honestly still delicious—just different!

You could also use a gluten-free flour blend if needed.

Step 2: bake

Once the batter is ready to go, bake it up in a doughnut pan. If you don’t have a doughnut pan, make doughnut holes using either a regular muffin pan or a mini muffin pan. Either option works just the same, but be sure to really grease the pan before adding the batter. This is a stickier batter, so greasing the pans is essential.

Bake the donuts for 8-10 minutes. They bake up really fast! Then, let them cool.

Step 3: the frosting

The frosting makes the donuts YUMMY! Just chocolate chips and oil melted together. Easy peasy!

It’s delicious and leaves you with chocolatey fingers.

Step 4: frost each donut

Once the donuts have baked, I like to let them cool completely, then dip them into the warm frosting. Let the chocolate harden, and then enjoy!

Each bite is filled with sweet, fluffy cake and extra fudgy chocolate frosting.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • 1. Preheat the oven to 350° F. Grease a 6-cup doughnut pan or 12-cup muffin pan with melted butter.
    2. Add 4 tablespoons butter to a pot set over medium heat. Allow the butter to brown lightly until it smells toasted, 2-3 minutes. Remove from the heat.
    3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the brown butter, maple syrup, yogurt, eggs, and vanilla until combined. Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, and mix until just combined.
    4. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pan, filling 1/2-2/3 of the way full. Bake 10-12 minutes, until just set. Remove and let cool 5 minutes, then run a knife around the edges to release and invert the pan.
    5. Meanwhile, make the glaze/frosting. Microwave the chocolate chips and oil on 30-second intervals, stirring after each, until melted and smooth.
    6. Dip or drizzle the doughnuts into the glaze. Let the chocolate set or quickly chill in the freezer until set.

  1. The serving size says 16 .. I realize that the nutritional information is an estimate but does that mean a serving is 1/2 a donut?

      1. The recipe says it makes 16 servings. The instructions say to use a 6 cup doughnut pan or 12 cup muffin pan. How are you getting 16 servings?

        1. Hey Nancy! Thanks so much for catching this. You will make 12 doughnuts if you use a 6 cup doughnut pan. So sorry for the mistake! Hope you enjoy the donuts! Thank you and have a great Wednesday and happy almost Easter!

These were delicious and really fun to make. 🙂 I did a white chocolate drizzle after letting the milk chocolate glaze set. So good!

    1. Hey Kim,
Love to hear this!! Thanks a bunch for trying these donuts and your comment! So glad they were enjoyed and love the idea of the white chocolate drizzle! xx

I made the muffin version. They needed to bake a total of 14 minutes. They were so easy to make and not overly sweet. We really enjoyed them.

      1. Hey Dionne,
Awesome!! Thank you so much for trying these donuts, love to hear they were enjoyed as muffins too! xxT

  3. I found these donuts to be rather dry. The ones that were less full in the donut pan were better than the ones that overfilled the pan by a touch. They were pretty dense and the chocolate was overpowering. I found spreading the batter into the donut pan challenging, but figured out that if I dipped my fingers in melted or soft butter, I could spread the batter by hand. The glaze takes quite a bit to set up. Probably need about 30 to 40 minutes for it to set up properly. I probably won’t make again, but it was fun to try!

    1. Hi Alli,
Thanks for giving these donuts a try and sharing your feedback, so very sorry to hear they turned out dry for you and the chocolate was not good. If there is anything that I can do, please let me know! xx

It’s fairly disingenuous for readers to rate this recipe a 5 without even making them yet. Sure they may sound good, but you need to make them before raving about them.

And by the way, I made them and did not love them. They are NOT better than the blue and white box. They really didn’t have a lot of flavor, to be honest. I won’t make them again.

Yummy recipe! I made them in a muffin tin because I don’t have a donut pan. I dipped half in the chocolate and the other half in maple icing. My kids loved them. Thank you!

        1. Hey Kristen,
Happy Sunday!! I appreciate you trying this recipe and your feedback, love to hear it turned out well! xx

It’s almost as bad as the people who don’t make the recipes at all and give them one star with no explanation as to why – or something vague like “Didn’t like.” It’s as if it were an orchestrated attempt by certain individuals to bring down her ratings without even trying the recipes.

I actually did make these donuts, and I have made some of HBH’s other donut recipes as well. They were quite flavorful and not at all dry. I made these for a baby shower over the weekend, and not one single person complained. They were really surprised these were home-made and as good as store-bought. They disappeared fast, that’s for sure!

  5. These were pretty disapoonting. I made these for my daughter’s birthday party and none of her friends would go near them. I tried to eat one dramatically with a lot of enthusiasm to try to encourage the kids, but no luck. I ended up having to feed them to my goats. Probably shouldn’t admit that because I know it’s junk food. I didn’t want to waste. My daughter is in her room crying at the moment. I really wish she had received the birthday dessert of her dreams, but unfortunately these were an epic fail. Maybe her birthday next year will be better 🙁

The donuts weee fantastic – thank you! Tieghan, you do not have to publish garbage comments like Riva’s. It obvious this is a snarky hater making up nonsense.

Anyone feeding chocolate donuts to a goat is guilty of animal cruelty, so it’s a relief that she’s just fabricating.

        1. People are allowed to not fawn over a recipe without being a hater! It’s ok that people don’t like some of Tieghan’s recipes, they’re allowed to voice that also!

    1. Hi Sam,
Thanks for trying these donuts and sharing your feedback, I’m so sorry to hear they weren’t enjoyed! xx

  6. Your hair always looks so much thicker and shinier when you’re in NYC. Is the water different there maybe? Whatever, it always looks great for your meetings and events.

    1. Thanks so much, Greta! Probably it’s because I am actually taking the time to style it:) Also, sometimes I have it professionally done. Have a great weekend! xT

I threw mine into the chocolate like you did on your stories and it fell apart. Turned out crumbly. I followed recipe exactly.

    1. Hi Diane,
Did you simply just dip them into the chocolate? Sorry to hear your donuts fell apart. Let me know if I can help in any other way:) xx

    1. Hi Sara,
So sorry to hear this. Can I ask what was wrong with the donuts? Is there anything that I can help with? Please let me know! xx

Yum! Made with 50% blanched almond flour and 50% gluten free flour in a mini bundt tray (don’t have donut). Delicous, thank you!

    1. Hey Jamie,
Happy Friday!! Thanks so much for making this recipe and your comment, love to hear it was a hit! xxT

      1. I’d love to make these, but I don’t understand how I would use the muffin tins? Do I just make muffins then?

YUM! I love donuts and I just bought a new donut pan to bake them! So perfect timing! These look amazing! Thanks Tieghan! Have a great day!

  10. I bought two USA donut pans, can’t wait to make this recipe with my grandson this weekend…thanks for the recipe, it looks like it will be just the ticket!!

    1. Hi Cathy,
That’s what I like to use, just make sure it’s Greek yogurt:) Let me know if you give these donuts a try, I hope you love them! xx

    1. Thanks so much, Tori!! I would use butter, that will work nicely for you:) I hope you love these donuts! xx
